Blair claims Africa can be free from aid within a generation

Writing in the Huffington Post last week, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair declared that, “I believe that within a generation, no African country need be dependent on aid.”  This from the man who doubled aid to Africa at the famous Gleneagles Summit, but did little to help African trade.

This is what he had to say about Gleneagles and his time in government, “I am proud of the changes we made at the G8 summit in Gleneagles in 2005 – doubling aid to Africa and delivering debt relief.  I am proud that I set up DfID, which continues to lead development thinking.  And I am proud to have contributed to the new consensus in British politics that development matters – I commend the commitment of the government to the 0.7% of GDP target for development assistance.”

AidEx a hit for Advance Aid

Back in London now from AidEx where there was a lot of interest in the Advance Aid concept of providing emergency relief NFIs from Africa, for Africa and stored in Africa – ready to be used in the event of an emergency.

Advance Aid heads for AidEx with a $250m agenda

We’re going to be exhibiting at AidEx in Brussels this week – open days are Wednesday and Thursday – and participating in a roundtable organised by PA International.  The roundtable will be discussing ‘The future of humanitarian aid and development assistance’, which is a large topic, but I’m sure we’ll give it a good go in the hour that we have available.

Loan containers provide instant secure storage in Dadaab

Two containers loaned by Advance Aid are being used in the Dadaab refugee camp as a logistics base.  The containers provide instant secure storage and, being insulated, also remain relatively cool.
